Our latest production for the ORF series “Universum,” directed by Harald Pokieser, focuses on research and species conservation at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo, the world’s oldest zoo, located within the grounds of the imperial Schönbrunn Palace.

The initial filming did not take place at the venerable zoo, but in South Africa. There, zoologist Angela Stöger is using state-of-the-art technology to study elephant communication.

At Schönbrunn, the researcher from the University of Vienna is particularly interested in the “conversations” between Mabuto, a baby elephant born in August, and his mother.
